BEFORE SURGERY - PREPARING YOUR FAMILY

To help you prepare your child for an upcoming surgery, you can:

• View the Day of Surgery – Photo Tour with your child to learn more about what to expect on the day of surgery
• Go to Telling Your Child for advice on talking to your child about the surgery
• Read books with the whole family about going to the hospital and having surgery – see the Surgery resource list
• Review the pamphlet Preparing for your child’s surgery for important information on getting your child ready for surgery.
• Have your teen read the pamphlet Just for Teens - Tips for Surgery 1-2 weeks before surgery.

If your child is quite anxious, the Child Life Specialist can suggest ways to help your child deal with any anxiety or stress. Call 403-955-5074.

As well, a Child Life Specialist may be available on the day of surgery, to talk to children about what to expect, answer questions and offer hands-on play with medical equipment.
