Calgary District Hospital Group (CDHG) Fonds 1891-1995 -- 38.7 m of text

Calgary District Hospital Group

In 1964 responsibility for the construction of the Rockyview General Hospital was assigned to the Metro-Calgary and Rural General Hospital District No. 93. The hospital opened in 1966. Provincial legislation made the District responsible for future hospitals east to Beiseker and west to the Banff National Park boundary. The city of Calgary was included in the District's jurisdiction. In 1971 the province transferred control of the Holy Cross Hospital to the District, creating the "first active multi-unit hospital organization in Alberta". In 1980 responsibility for the Colonel Belcher Hospital was transferred to the District from the federal Department of Veterans Affairs. In 1983 the District was given responsibility for building and administering the Peter Lougheed Centre. A year before it opened, control of the new hospital was transferred to the Calgary General Hospital. In 1986, before that transfer, the District was renamed the Calgary District Hospital Group, and adopted the "four-H" logo to reflect the four hospitals under its mandate. In 1995 responsibility for the three hospitals administered by the Calgary District Hospital Group was transferred to the Home.

Holy Cross Hospital

In 1891 members of Montreal's Sisters of Charity (Grey Nuns) established the Holy Cross Hospital in Calgary. This was a frame building with four beds, located just west of the Catholic church, now Saint Mary's Cathedral. The hospital moved the following year to a site on the banks of the Elbow River, where it expanded regularly.

In 1907 a School of Nursing was established which operated until 1979. In 1928 the hospital was renovated, and in 1950, 1967 and 1974 new wings were built.

In 1969 the Holy Cross Hospital was sold to the Province of Alberta, and in 1971 control was transferred to the Metro-Calgary and Rural General Hospital District No. 93, which became the Calgary District Hospital Group in 1986. The Holy Cross was known for leading cardiac and mental health programs. In 1995 the Holy Cross Hospital became the responsibility of the Calgary Regional Health Authority. It was closed in 1996.

In 1941 construction of a new hospital at the corner of 12th Avenue and 4th Street SW began. It was expanded in 1956 and renovated in the 1970s and 1980s.

In 1980 administration of the Colonel Belcher Hospital was transferred to Metro-Calgary and Rural General Hospital District No. 93, which became the Calgary District Hospital Group in 1986.
