Calgary Health Region ARCHIVES

The Calgary Health Region Archives was formally established in 1997. The archives acquires, maintains, organizes, and provides access to the archival records of the Calgary Health Region and its predecessor organizations.

The largest volume of records comes from Calgary's hospitals, but the Archives also houses records of other health care organizations, and of individuals who have donated records related to the history of health care in Calgary. The archival records include a large number of historical and contemporary photographs, as well as a collection of artifacts related to the history of health care in Calgary.

Because staffing is insufficient to actively manage archives, the Information and Privacy Department only retrieves archives in exceptional circumstances.

Archival Holdings
In addition to Calgary Health Region records, the Calgary Health Region Archives hold the records of the Calgary Health Region's predecessor institutions, including individual hospitals (such as the Calgary General Hospital), groups of hospitals (such as the Calgary District Hospital Group) and other health care providers (such as the Calgary Board of Health). The Calgary Health Region Archives became responsible for the records of these organizations following the establishment of the Calgary Health Region. The Archives preserves documents, images, and artifacts.
	The archives are organized by the institution or function that created the records. All the records produced by one organization are called the "fonds" of that organization.

	Salvation Army Grace Hospital Fonds - The archival records of the Salvation Army Grace Hospital.
	Foothills Hospital Fonds -The archival records of the Foothills Hospital.
	Calgary District Hospital Group Fonds - The archival records of the Calgary District Hospital Group, including the Holy Cross Hospital, the Rockyview General Hospital, and the Colonel Belcher Hospital.
	Alberta Children's Hospital Fonds - The archival records of the Alberta Children's Hospital.
	Calgary Board of Health Fonds - Many of the Calgary Board of Health records are minutes and attachments from Board meetings following the 1973 provincial restructuring of public health boards. Also included are administrative records from the operational arm of the Board, and records related to public health programs.
