Becoming a Volunteer

Who can become a RGH Volunteer?

You can because...

You are a people person. You enjoy being with people and find it easy to talk with anyone. You’re an active listener and know the difference between listening vs. just hearing. You know that everyone has a different style of communicating and you are able to adjust your communication style to meet other’s needs. English is the language we use to communicate in the hospital and you look forward to using your excellent verbal and written skills.

You are compassionate. You genuinely care about others and seek out opportunities to lend emotional support and comfort. Maybe you’ve been a patient or a caregiver and you can understand and appreciate what it’s like to be a patient.

You are an adult (18 YOA and older) and are a responsible person who accepts a commitment knowing you will be able to be there when you say you will. You’re the kind of person if you can’t make your shift, you provide advance notice so that an alternate can be found to replace you. You know that patients, families and staff are counting on you and you don’t like to disappoint them.

What do I need to do to become a volunteer?

Please call us at 403-943-3566, press 0 or email us at rgh.volunteer@albertahealthservices.ca.

We will ask you for your name and a contact number where one of our staff can reach you Mon-Fri, between the hours of 8:30-4:30.

You will receive a phone call from our coordinator or program assistant asking you why you are exploring volunteer opportunities and which program area are you most interested in. This helps us to determine if we have an opportunity that’s going to meet your needs.

If we have an opportunity that will be a good match to your skills and interests, we’ll ask you to meet with us for an interview.

Please bring to the interview, the name and daytime phone number of two references.  References can be previous or current employers (paid and/or volunteer work) or if you have not worked recently, someone who can provide a character reference.  We don’t recommend selecting a family member or a personal friend – they have a tendency to be a little biased!
