Physicians and the Calgary Health Region

The Calgary Health Region is one of Canada’s largest integrated health care organizations, with an annual operating budget of over $1.4 billion, with1/2 billion in approved capital projects over the next 5 years. It is committed to excellence in providing an accessible, accountable and integrated community-based health system, which promotes shared responsibility for improved health. The Region has a five-year plan in place to ensure that a high level of medical care be provided by the Region, its physicians, and its other health professionals in the future.

The Calgary Health Region works with over 2200 physicians. Physicians generally relate to one of the Medical Departments (see next page). These departments have a regional mandate and span all acute care sites and community health facilities. The departments are responsible for credentialling of physicians and hospital privileges.

Opportunities for Physicians

The Region is dedicated to working with physicians in order to provide state-of-the-art health care to the Calgary region and its referral area in Southern Alberta and southeastern British Columbia. Through its Physician Partnership Steering Committee, physicians have the opportunity to develop innovative new programs to further excellence in patient care.

Alberta's tax advantage for physicians is between $11,000 to $33,000 per year over other Canadian provinces.

Faculty of Medicine

The Calgary Health Region has close ties to the University of Calgary, Faculty of Medicine. This provides many opportunities to physicians who work with the Region to participate in teaching, research, and also for their own continuing medical education. Alberta provides a rich research funding environment. The Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research (AHFMR) provides substantial support for biomedical and health research at Alberta universities and health sciences institutions. In 2000, AHFMR’s budget for research exceeded $40 million. The University of Calgary's research revenues in 2000-2001 exceeded $170 million.

The Faculty has doubled in size in the last ten years. Opportunities for teaching and interaction with physicians in training abound as the University of Calgary provides numerous undergraduate and postgraduate training programs in conjunction with the Region. The medical class size has increased to 100 students in 2001 and is expected to increase further. There are 35 residency programs providing physicians the opportunity to work with enthusiastic and interested young physicians.
